I Brazilian Conference of Positive Psychology
Martin Seligman will be in Brazil on October 20 and 21, invited by Patricia Carlos de Andrade – President of Millenium Institute and student of the master’s program in Positive Psychology at Pennsylvania University – we have the support of well known Organizations for this event which will take place in Rio de Janeiro. For the event we count with the support and partnership of APPAL- Associação de Psicologia Positiva da América Latina – Positive Psychology Association of Latin America.
Since the 90’s decade, a new field of research has emerged and conquered impressing results in universities, in education, and in institutions in general. The fact that it is not very well know in Brazil creates a great opportunity to generation of media impact, in a presentation of the field to the academia and to the great public. This is positive psychology – a field of scientific studies, a cultural and academic movement, and a proposal of balance from traditional psychology.
Martin Seligman observed that besides the role of curing disease, taking people from a negative point – to a neutral point, psychology would also have an important contribution to give to personal development, well being, human flourishing and attainment of goals and meaning. Based in facts that showed how the rise of wealth in the world greatly affected the well being of the population and increased the number of psychological illnesses, specially depression in people increasingly younger, its message was able to attract people that in isolation had done research on character strengths and virtues, positive emotions, engagement and meaningful activities etc. in the search for well being, achievements and happiness. Currently, courses on positive psychology are ofered in traditional American universities, such as Pennsylvania University and Harvard, with many professors and doctorate students conducting research in the field.
One of the fields in which positive psychology has had large influence attracting many researchers and consultants is the field of institutions and corporations. The University of Pennsylvania has sold programs based on research conducted from Seligman, who has training people about resilience on the Army, which will be followed by the remaining American Armed Forces; and a positive education program was sold to a traditional Australian school, and has now spread across Australia reaching United Kingdom.
